The Best Time of Year (and Time of Day) to Ride Near Waco
The question we get most before a booking is some version of "when should we come?" Usually it is really two questions: what season is best, and morning or evening. We ride year-round. No bad time. But there is a best time for what you want, and if you are trying to beat the Texas heat or lock in a fall date, the timing matters.
The quick version: The best time of year to go horseback riding in Waco Texas is fall or spring, when days are mild. Summer rides are great too, you just go early or at sunset to skip the midday heat. Spring and Fall is the most popular season and books up first, so reserve ahead.
Can you go horseback riding near Waco year-round?
Yes. Every ride at Brazos Bluffs Ranch runs year-round, and each season on the ranch looks a little different. What changes is the temperature, the light, and how far ahead you should book. Here is how the year shakes out.
Season by season near Waco
| Season | What it's like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fall (Oct to Dec) | Milder days, lower humidity, long golden light. Highly-requested season. | Almost anything; book early, dates fill fast |
| Winter (Jan & Feb) | Cool and quiet, midday rides, campfire s'mores on the sunset ride | Sunset rides with the s'mores stop |
| Spring (Mar to May) | Green grassland, wildflowers, comfortable temperatures | First-timers and families; scenery at its greenest |
| Summer (Jun to Sep) | Hot midday, warm but tolerable early and late. Ride morning or sunset. | Early-morning rides and the sunset ride. Dramatic summer sunsets! |
Planning around the fall rush? The Brazos Bluffs Trail Ride is the most popular ride, about 90 minutes, year-round, first-timers welcome. Fall weekends go first, so check dates and book ahead.
Morning or sunset: which time of day is better?
Both are good rides. They are just different moods:
- Morning: cooler air, especially in summer, and the whole rest of your Waco day stays open for the Silos and downtown.
- Late afternoon / sunset: softer light and the overlook stop timed to the sunset. The Sunset Horseback Ride allows you to take in the beauty of a Texas sunset at a multi mile overlook. See what to expect on a sunset ride for the full picture.
- Midday: perfectly good fall through spring; in high summer we only ride in the morning or evening.
What about the Texas summer heat?
It is a fair thing to ask, and it is the reason we book early and late in summer. About 3/4 of the trail is in the shade. Dress for the sun with long pants, closed-toe boots or shoes, and a hat; our guide to what to wear horseback riding covers the rest. Come at the right time with the right attitude and summer is a beautiful time to ride a horse!
